Every program we run reduces shelter intake in a specific, measurable way. We work upstream, solving the problems that put pets at risk before surrender becomes the only option.
Need Help? Call (205) 754-7542An unplanned litter does not just affect one family. It puts 4 to 8 animals into a system already at capacity. SNIP covers the full cost of spay or neuter surgery for households earning $60,000 or less, with a $100 stipend using a tiered income model.
One SNIP intervention costs $180. Sheltering one litter costs the system $6,000 to $12,000. Prevention wins every time.
The Bridge is our diversion program for families about to lose their pet. A $400 vet bill. A broken fence. A landlord who says the dog has to go. These are fixable problems, and we fix them.
Through our emergency support system, The Bridge provides direct assistance: food, gas cards, emergency vet help, temporary supplies, and whatever it takes to keep a family together through the crisis.
For animals that do enter the system, sitting in a kennel does not improve their chances. Foster-to-Train pairs shelter animals with temporary foster homes where they learn basic obedience, house manners, and socialization skills.
Foster families commit to a short intensive period. We supply everything: food, supplies, training resources, and support. The animal gets a real chance at a permanent home. The shelter gets an open kennel.
Most adoption returns happen in the first three months. The dog chews something expensive. The cat does not get along with the kids. The new owner did not expect the adjustment period.
Adoption Boost gives new adopters 90 days of post-adoption support: training resources, supply assistance, behavioral guidance, and a direct line to someone who can help.
Structured, low-stress adoption events held in neutral spaces. A professional trainer guides every introduction so the dog and the family get to know each other before anyone signs anything. Better matches mean fewer returns.
The Pet Help Desk is the front door to every AAF program. Call (205) 754-7542, tell us what you are dealing with, and we connect you to the right resource. No forms, no hoops, no judgment. Just real help from someone who knows the system.
Beyond the six core programs, AAF operates targeted initiatives that close specific gaps in the prevention pipeline.
Micro-grants for families facing housing deposit barriers. A $300 pet deposit should not be the reason a family loses their pet.
Emergency support for neonatal kittens and puppies that require specialized care. Coming as AAF's capacity grows.
Technology and coordination tools for animal control officers across the seven-county service area.
Whether you need help, want to volunteer, or want to fund prevention, there is a place for you.
